Hi there, my ds has just turned 6 and is in year one . During parents evening the teacher mentioned they have been grouped and he is on the high end of expected level , can anyone explain what she meant at all? Thank you !

As a Y1 teacher I would assume that the teacher is talking about the whole curriculum not just reading.
We don’t use book banding so a child reading yellow or green or gold at this stage wouldn’t particularly make me judge them as emerging expected or exceeding.

OP you need to ask the teacher what they mean but I’d assume they mean against the Y1 curriculum expectations.

"some parents did push reading etc before they started school."

Well they might have pushed, but might have not got it unless the children were capable.
I always got snide comments about my ds reading early, what's wrong with that? Grin

Thanks norest. I was just a little confused with higher end of expected ...

Higher end of expected means achieving slightly above expectations surely, so at the upper end of the middle probably. He exceeded 6 expectations at the end reception but some will have exceeded in lots of areas.
He's doing fine I'm not sure why you are confused, what are you confused about?

There’s nothing in the curriculum that says a child reading green at this stage is working at expected level. Individual schools might set their own expectations but I find them limiting.
The actual expectations are set out in the program of study for each subject
