Tracking issues

Ds7 has started year 3 this September. During infants he had a couple of assessments to see if we could find any issues, last one being a processing speed one. Never got any straight answers from these. New junior school teacher has spoke to me and thinks he may have a tracking issue and is referring him to try and find out. I don’t know anything about ‘tracking’ does anyone have any knowledge on this so I can wise up on what they’re thinking now? Thanks

If you think there are tracking issues use the website engaging eyes. Order some red/blue glasses on Amazon. My son jumped from level 2 ORT books to level 7 in a matter if weeks. He had been stuck on level 2 nearly a year.

One of mine had tracking issues. The optometrist gave us exercises which resolved the issue. I wouldn't buy red or blue glasses or indeed any optical aid til you've seen a professional.

She probably means that he isn't keeping his gaze on the text as he reads along a line in his book. It's not uncommon and you don't need to spend any money.
Type out random lines of letters/numbers and ask him to go along and circle one specific number or letter.
e.g. circle the 3
j 3 k 3 s 5 6 3 g t 3 j 7 k l 3 a
(There's tons of stuff online if you google).
Watch his eyes as he reads and encourage him to keep his eyes on the text.

The reason she gave me for thinking a tracking issue is because they can be happily focusing on one question / number on one part of the page and he suddenly jumps across the page to something different? His eyes are fine, been referred after our latest eye test to the hospital for visual stress test but teacher is set on a tracking issue

Isn’t that just called natural curiosity?

not all opticians will check for tracking issues, it isn't general sight. basically eyes don't automatically go from left to right but to read in our language they have to and some children find this very hard at first. it isn't helped by computer games and so on when things come from any direction. Exercises can be very straight forward but effective and make a noticeable difference.

It could of course just be general distraction but I think it is worth checking.
