Suddenly getting free school meals but I have not applied for it?

Just wondering how is it possible to suddenly get free school meals (ks2) if I have not applied for it? Don't you need to apply for it? I will ask the school on Monday but I am just wondering how is this possible?
Thanks

Is it really free school meal? Or dc just decided he/she wants it without realising you need to pay for it?
I've heard some child is actually getting school meals that they haven't payed for, because they want it, and school can't deny the child wanting it. And parents were informed, but refusing to pay, so school is actually at a loss.

I have always paid for my DC school meals (our school uses parentpay) but I have received a refund and it says FSM. I have never applied for it though?

Have you completed a pupil premium form?

xmummyofone · 30/09/2017 23:03

No I have not Frazzled74

Did you apply for housing benefit?

xmummyofone · 30/09/2017 23:05

I can only think that this is a mistake. I have already emailed parent pay and on Monday will speak to the school. I just don't understand what is going on

This happened to me many years ago! I got free school meals for two weeks until my school realised they had messed up with the admin. I kept telling them they weren't for me but the teachers / admin staff thought I was just embarrassed about getting free meals! Turned out they were for another pupil whose surname had changed over the summer to the same as mine and she had the same first initial

That's strange then - HB claims trigger a fsm check if you tick the box.

Saw you posted this in primary education. What age child? They are free for primary aren't they?

xmummyofone · 30/09/2017 23:09

codswallopandbalderdash yeah that must be what is happening to me. The school gives the forms to apply for school meals at the end of each year but I never fill them in as I work and unless rules have changed I do not qualify for it!
