Non-decodable books in reception

Dd2 started reception a few weeks ago. She was reading before she started, nothing amazing but could happily get through her sisters basic pink/red books.

The reading books she is coming home from school with are marked as pink but are mainly not decodable with her current knowledge.

I find I'm spending a lot of our reading time trying to teach her knew phonics sounds. This evening we have up and flew through one of the songbirds level 2 books with no issues.

Is this normal for reception? I'd assumed that books at this stage would be decodable. Is it something that's worth me bringing up?

Sounds normal for school that doesn't follow NC properly, from what I read on MN.

There was quite a long thread about the same issue in the last week or so. In short, she shouldn't be getting these books but getting the school to agree with that will be a task.

Ds ended up teaching himself rest of phonics last year due to this issue. Sadly it's downside of biff and flipping chip.

Not really - Floppy's Phonics are still Biff and Chip, etc, but 100% decodable.

If you have resources at home, jut get on with it, and don't bother with school books.

Thanks for the reassurance. We have some suitable books at home so I will stick with those in future.

It just seems so remiss as wading through books she cannot read is knocking her confidence and she is less keen to read because of it.

How do you work out what level the biff chip books are? I've looked at the Oxford reading tree and the ages that go with the books don't seem to match up. Some of the books like cat in the bag are classed as a 4 year olds book, yet most the children I know at 4 cannot read this level of book?
