What's the difference between year 5 and year 6 maths

DD has just started year 5 and says that the maths is far too easy and she'd like to do year 6 maths instead. Does anyone think that's a good idea?

They will be revising last years work first before moving on to any new work. Far too soon to decide they want to do work from a different year

Okay, thanks, I don't want her turned off maths because she's bored. 😃

Here's some material you can compare yr5 and yr6 contents.

That's really useful, thanks, I'll have a look at that now. 😃

Reading them, it looks like she can already do all the things expected at the end of year 5.

I've emailed her teacher, who also happens to be the maths lead, he seems to agree with dementedpixie, but I'm sure he'll notice if DD completes her work too quickly.

They should be able to differentiate and offer extension work if she is ahead of others. My ds had his own maths group in his class (the only person in it!) And does work that higher primaries are doing. He has been doing this for most of his primary years (now in primary 7 which is his last year at primary school)

I certainly hope so dementedpixie. Time will tell.

Sounds like your DS is doing very well. 😃

Thanks so much. Her teacher has offered her a place on a term long course on Saturday mornings at another school, she's champing at the bit! 😆
