Moving house!

Looking for some advice from parents with experience of applying for primary school amidst looking to move house. We have our house on the market and is hoping to move, we are looking no further than about 10/15miles of where we currently live. We have found a house we like yet so don't know exactly which area we will end up in. We also won't know how long this will take.
I will apply for schools in our current area but my questions are....
What do we do if we move after the January deadline and haven't applied for a place in the new area? Will we end up with a place in a school that isn't our preference because we have just moved to the area? If we buy a house but have not yet completed by January, can we still start the application process for schools in the new area before we move in?
I would be grateful if anyone knows the answers to these questions! TIA.

Our area has exactly the same process as yellowfish. We did move. We applied by the deadline in the area we were moving to and then needed to provide a solicitors letter proving completion. Had we not they would have assessed our application based on our old address which was 10 miles away.

We put our house on the market in the september and had an offer in the October. They wanted to exchange in the December but it didn't happen until February and we completed on the day we needed to provide proof of completion to the local council for the school place. Stressful does not even cover it.
