I know this might sound like I'm unknowledgeable, but if a child got 99 in maths, 109 in reading and 124 in spag in year 6 sats does this mean that they have failed as they didn't get 100 or over in maths.

It means that they narrowly missed achieving the national expectation for Maths in the test, yes.

What was the teacher assessment?

Impossible as the highest score available is 120!

And yes, a score of 99 means they narrowly missed achieving the expected level for maths.

But 'failing' y6 SATs doesn't mean anything. The scores will be used to set official targets for GCSE results in 5 years, but in a decent school won't affect how your child is taught. Might impact initial setting but 99 v 100 won't make any difference.

Plus imo it is better to be lower in maths and higher for English (compared with vice versa), as English affects all the subjects whereas Maths only affects Maths and a bit of Science (spoken as parent of 2 DDs who struggle with both)

It just means they almost hit the expected score in maths, almost got exceeding expectations in reading and performed a blooming miracle in spag cos top score is 120 Grin

Thanks for your replies. I don't know where they got the spag score from but I have heard of two children now who 'supposedly' got 124. I realise now that the top score is 120 and even checked the raw scores on the national charts but they are obviously a lot lower!!!

Silly me, the child got 99 in maths, 109 in reading and 114 in spag. It was my DIL who told me and she must have typed too fast and made the mistake!!!!
