Reception class size 33

DD is starting school this September and I have found out that the class size is 33. I thought the maximum is 30! I'm slightly upset as we may have applied to a different school had we known, although I suppose the school didn't know as 2 successfully appealed.
Will the school have to have more staff to cover 33?

That's rubbish. My DS was in a class of 36 in reception. They got around it by having another teacher in part time and taking small groups out for maths and English. I think legally they have to teach maths and English in groups of 30 or less but with other things - art, music, PE - they can go over the 30. It is far from ideal especially in the first year of school.

No, that is not true. The law is as Mrz and I have set out on this thread. Regardless of the subject there must be no more than 30 children with a single qualified teacher. Excepted children (e.g. children admitted on appeal) do not count towards the total. So a class of 33 children with a single teacher is fine provided 3 of them are excepted.
