Speech delay

Question for anyone who's child has had speech delay really....
Our DC starts school in September and has been receiving some help with speech since DC was 2.
It's been noted that he doesn't have understanding delay, it's purely with his speech. So my question, what experiences have you had with your child in reception and when would you say they finally caught up school wise? I know everyone's child is different but I do worry for DC in reception and throughout infants really.....

Youngest is four and has asd and has significant speech issues and will have a 1:1. Her sister who is now 7 and coming to the end of year two also has asd and ADHD and had a lot of speech issues (unable to hold a conversation, learnt speech). Her speech really got going in year one and she's got no issues with speech and it's at the appropriate level.

Try not to worry though I understand. I'm dreading sending my dd in September though I know her 1:1 as I think she'll find it hard.

My friend has a dd with expressive language delay and she's six and really coming along.

Thanks for that, you're right, it's such a worry.
He seems so young in many aspects but so capable in others. I just know reception and all the phonics work is going to be a foreign language to a child still learning to talk.

I'm also worried about phonics but my middle dd did pick it up it just took longer than some others. He will get there it's just hard when you feel under pressure to have them at a certain level. As long as school are supportive that's the main thing.

Miaow, I could have wrote that post as that sounds almost the same as my DC. I also have an other older child and to say he's a chatterbox is an understatement!
Also the help I've received from SALT has been appalling really. I raised my concerns before DC 2 year check as I knew something wasn't quite right. All I've had is 3 "assessments" and packs sent in the post! And ironically the tasks they send don't actually involve speaking!!! It's all "put the hat on the teddy" which DC does and looks at me if to say "mummy you're kidding right??!" frustrating.

DD2 had quite a lot of SALT in nursery which really helped.
She has/had poor quality of speech both pronunciation and stringing sentences together.

It didn't affect her learning of phonics, that was fine.
It didn't particularly affect friendships - the others learned to wait for her to get her words out.

What we feel it has affected is her spelling, as she (still age 12) can't sound out words slowly and clearly enough to herself to hear all the separate sounds, so when writing she often misses out whole syllables altogether.
