Has the class size cap been scrapped?

I was really surprised that the small local primary that my son will be attending in September will have a class size of 36!!

I had in my head that there was a max class size of 32, has it all changed now?

Are you in England?

Neverknowing · 14/06/2017 20:09

That's insane! I feel bad for the teachers, it must be such a hard job.
I don't know if there's a cap but they have closed a lot of schools around here and I wondered how they were doing it. That's so sad!

And what year is your DS?

MabelTheCow · 14/06/2017 20:12

One teacher to 30 children in EYFS and KS1 but no limits from Year 3 and above.
I know some EYFS settings with more children in a class but they have multiple teachers and a free flow/fluid environment

Reception and yes, in England

How many teachers in the class?

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 14/06/2017 20:26

Shock Are you sure it's in his class rather than there being 2 reception classes?

wickerlampshade · 14/06/2017 20:59

sounds like they lost a few appeals.....

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 14/06/2017 21:03

Is there a few sets of twins or triplets?

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 14/06/2017 21:04

30 is supposed to be limit but they could lose appeals or could have some excepted children.

SavoyCabbage · 14/06/2017 21:04

Are there two teachers? I was in a class of 40 today but there were two teachers so I was actually only in charge of 19.

PatriciaHolm · 14/06/2017 21:07

The maximum class size in infants in England with one class teacher is 30.

I would be very very surprised if an appeals panel had decided to let in another 6. I would imagine the most likely scenario is that they actually have 2 qualified teachers and have decided to teach as one large composite class rather than 2 classes of 18.

What is the normal PAN for the school?

MrsHathaway · 14/06/2017 21:14

I agree there will be two qualified teachers (possibly plus a TA or two popping in and out).

Lots of Reception year is small group work anyway so the total number in the room doesn't matter as much as the overall staff ratio.

The other possibility is whether the class has got nursery children in it. Depending on ages and numbers it could be that they will not count towards the ICS regs.
