Hi

I'm fairly new here but wondered if anyone had any tips or ideas for a theme my sons school is running next week?

He has to go to school dressed as a person from another country and I'm totally stumped!

I did say (don't want to offend anyone here) that we could dress him as an aussie, with a hat with corks around the brim (I would have a LOT of fun collecting the corks LOL!!

I'm not sure if they're after national costume or stereotypical.

Any advice anyone can give would be great.

My son is nearly 5 and in reception class.

Thanks!

I'd go for national costume. Less likely to cause offense.

You are at the beginning of a journey into a world of crepe paper!

What the heck do you dress a boy in for national costume? How about baseball cap, Gap top and jeans - instant American! Just flicking through a book called "Children Just Like Me" (DK book - photos of kids from around the world). All the boys seem to be in sweatshirt and trousers! Unless you happen to possess the whatever-it's-called that I've seen in Morocco - baggy top and trousers in v lightweight material (thought you probably wouldn't have... )

Does he have a parka with a fur hood? That plus warm trousers and wellies (or snow boots if you know a skiing family) could be Lapland/Alaska

I guess he wouldn't wear a kilt??!!

Hi girls

Thanks for your replies! I am glad you can see my predicament.

I quite like the alaska / lapland theme, my son has got a thing about husky dogs and he does own a brown parka, this could go with his wellies and thick trousers and I could make up a fishing rod for him!!

The american idea is also good, but I don't own any gap clothes though he does have a pair of levis!!

Oh the joys of school......

He could be a Native American if you have an Indian outfit or a headband with feather and warpaint. Then just beige or brown t-shirt and trousers.

MaoriTattoo

Can't find a good picture but if you felt up to somehow painting his face to look like a Maori tattoo he could go as a New Zealander. No other "disguise" necessary really.

Have a look at national costumes on wikipedia. Japanese is pretty good, could make a cardboard samurai- if think this is appp, or Russia - hat and long coat. What about mexico - poncho and sombrero!
