Just got our place confirmed at primary school. When do you start to purchase uniform? Should I wait till the end of the summer holidays or start getting little bits now?

4 year old uniform does sell out simply for the reason that it is parents full of enthusiasm. As they get further through the school it becomes more of a chore.

Wait for the offer M & s do a 25 % off which is when I usually do mine..Shoes not till August.

Many PTAs do second hand uniform sales for logo items.
Some of the stuff at the DD's primary looked like it had hardly ever been worn.

You need to decide will you be 'clean uniform every day regardless' or 'clean uniform once a week unless it looks dire' and buy accordingly.

Everything named.

Velcro shoes.

Get a personalised gym bag - check with school that reception do PE and that drawstring is not banned mind! The one I get is only 6.99 and has lasted so far - ds1 is now in yr 2 so buying another for ds2. And shoe labels too. In fact label everything. I use a pen and iron on labels.

I started about June last year, and Sainsburys had sold out of most of the basic stuff, and never restocked most of it, online or in store. I would say buy ASAP!

MongerTruffle · 22/04/2017 16:54

Another question, would you get pencil case etc or not. I'm a pen freak and am quite excited about stationary shopping with her.

Our school doesn't allow pencil cases.

NatashaAmy93 · 22/04/2017 17:39

Reception generally don't need pencil cases etc as the school provide pencils and everything else needed. I have however bought my son a pencil case and filled it for homework at home to give him something to look forward to x

If it's Navy uniform you're after, Sainsbury's seem to have run out of most things already! Hoping they're going to restock soon.

Buy early for small sizes - they seem to run out by the end of summer.

If you like sew-in name tapes then the sellers on eBay are just as good as Cash's and a fraction of the price (and do pink letters Hmm).

Local supermarkets etc only stock colours that local schools have, so if you are the only navy pinafore school in a sea of charcoal grey then you are pretty much stuffed in terms of popping down to Asda (fab btw) and will need to order online or pay a fortune at John Lewis in desperation!

my2bundles · 25/04/2017 15:57

Sew in name labels are the best. You only need to buy them at the start of your child's school life and you can remove them and sew into new uniform as the child grows. I did this with my eldest who is now 18 andIm doing it again with my little one. Far better than having to reorder stick in ones every couple of years.

TheHobbitMum · 25/04/2017 16:00

On your info evening at school they often have a uniform shop (logo items, book bags etc ) and possibly a second hand stall for uniform so I'd wait until you've had your induction evening. Then I'd pick up everything else you need, I've found living in a small town that everywhere sells out quickly. Get shoes early in August as leaving until the end can mean very little choice

Bumpsadaisie · 25/04/2017 16:09

m and s always have 25% off uniform sometime in June.

I would get clothes then and shoes first or second week of Aug.

😀

I've just sat down and sorted out money for school trip, milk money and after school club. I use these money envelopes to keep it all safe and separate.

Just Stationery 70x105mm Money Envelope (Wallet of 100) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0032PFY8I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_5.6.ybGCENEJ3?tag=mumsnetforum-21

Mehfruittea · 25/04/2017 21:25

Meant to say, we are always having to send money in for this and that! So glad I bought these, also use them for paying my cleaner. Grin

I would happily throw the envelopes in to recycling for cashless! Grin I don't really use cash except for this, so have to get money from the cash point, buy a kit Kat (it's the law here) so that I have the change for blooming milk money and seeds for grounds day. WTF? Grounds isn't even grammatically correct.
