I've just received confirmation that dd1 has been awarded a place in our first choice primary school which I'm delighted about. I've received a letter from the school which says there is a very important meeting to discuss admission to the school, meet the teachers, order uniform etc. Problem is we have a week abroad booked which clashes with the school meeting.

I really didn't want to have to phone up and say I can't make the meeting as I don't want us to appear difficult in any way before she's even started and I really did want to go (chance to meet other mums etc). But what can we do? I have been thinking of trying to get the holiday changed but this would be very difficult (we've made other arrangements around this date) and it would also incur additional costs if its possible to change at all.

Would you try to change your holiday or ring and explain??? Please help!

ring and explain. No-one is going to care!

Ring and explain. It's just one of those things and they will understand. And there will probably be other opportunities to meet Mums. Enjoy the holiday!

Definately ring and explain

Ring and explain, and arrange to go in and meet the teacher & buy uniform on another date. I know it feels important, but it's not a big deal really

I would write a very apologetic letter explaining - I'm sure it can't be the first time that it's happened so the school should be understanding. Often schools have more than one of these meetings - ask if there are going to be anymore and if not try to seem as flexible and accommodating as you can with other times you could go in and meet the teachers etc. They're not going to put a black mark against your name before your DD has even started.

Just ask if you could call in at another convenient time i sure they will be fine.

thank you I feel better now. I just didn't want to get off on the wrong foot before she's even started. I'm probably making too much of a big deal of it but my baby's starting school!!

I think I'll ring on Monday and explain the situation. Thanks again
