Missing first 8 days after Easter holidays

My son's grandfather had suddenly passed away few days ago. Still very shocked and have not yet broken the news to my little boy as he is very close to him.

his funeral will be abroad (where he died) on the 18th. The whole religious rituals for the funeral where we from is about few days. If we do go I'm planning on leaving on the 16th (first day back after Easter holidays) and coming back on the 24th. Tickets any day before that are reduciously expensive which also mean's he will miss the first 8 days of school.

Any advice how to get this authorised as I know you only get 3 days authorised when a family member dies. Also will that mean I need to fill the form after going back to school as I have tried calling there's no one at school. Everyone's on holiday

Try emailing. They might pick up from home and email a form back. Mention the religious/cultural element and it might get authorised.

It's unlikely the school will authorise and absence that long but hopefully they will be understanding.

Hes 6 and in year 1

It's unlikely to be authorised but probably won't result in a fine unless that's your schools protocol
There's nothing you can do so I would just drop the school an email telling them of your plans

How can the first day back after the Easter holidays be the 16th? That's a Sunday.

This is not universally true, though it might be the policy your HT has decided upon.

I think you just email, explain the circumstances, cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Surely the most he will miss is 5 days? Schools won't go back until Tuesday 18th, then if he's back to school on Tuesday 25th that would be 5 days missed.

I would email now, as someone may well be reading them, and explain.

I work in a school these days & had a parent email just before the hols to say thst an emergency had taken her and her family abroad. We just ask for proof of a last minute flight booking - an email confirmation dated within 2 days would be fine. You should be fine to provide that if asked? I don't think you've actually booked yet?

Also, with this trip being for a funeral the airline may offer you a discounted compassionate fare which may also be referenced in the confirmation, and enable you to travel there and back in less than 8 days.

We live in France. When my father died in the middle of the February half-term last year I had to keep DD with me in England and she missed 10 days of school. That's life!
