Ds is having an Evacuee day at school as part of their WW2 topic - they have to wear suitable costumes - so far I'm thinking long shorts, long socks, gas mask box, little suitcase and teddy (they are all walking to the local station as if being evacuated) - I was wondering if there's anything else I could add and where would I find a sleeveless pullover (apart from hacking the arms of an old school v neck jumper) ?

Cut his hair very short

Try a school uniform shop for a sleeveless pullover.
I'd also recommend trying to get a school cap from a charity or second-hand shop too.
Hawkins Bazaar do wooden pop-guns!
Unless you are a glutton for punishment don't do what I did and knit your ds a slipover

Try a charity shop. I did step-d's costume last year for a couple of quid. Grey trousers cut off so they were long shorts, pair of long white socks, a blouse and a jumper that was too small for her. I wrapped one of dd's shoe boxes in brown paper and attached string for the gas mask and made a big label for dsd. We had a really old suitcase in the loft that we were going to send her with but she wouldn't take it. She said I was going OTT!

Good ideas in the stills from the Narnia film - have a Google.

Get the box you have wash powder tablets in and put brown paper over or paint in brown. Put string around. Perfect gas mask box

It was a cool slipover (this was for World Book Day and ds was Just William btw, but same era) and it brought some closet knitters out of the staffroom too.
I love to knit and this was a simple boxy cotton slipover from Vogue Vintage Knitting. It wasn't one of those brain-drying but beautiful Fair Isle ones!

Marina - my knitting is so basic I think he'd be wearing a shapeless cloth ! Have just looked in local uniform shop, but no sleeveless pullovers.

Boys - grey school trousers with long grey school socks pulled over trousers. Pair of lace up boots, or similar if you have them, old tatty jumper preferably dark colour. I went to Oswald Bailey and bought a check flat cap.

girls - long scruffy looking dress (charity shop is good for this sort of thing.) Blouse under dress, long socks, old cardie.

That'a all I did for mine, and it was fine.

Believe it or not, DS1 (age 8) bought a replica rubber gas mask from a fancy dress shop near us a few months ago. I think it was about a tenner. I was highly amused when he got home with it. He wore it to school for a history day (he was agrieved the teacher made him take it off for assembly.....)

a gas mask would be fab - have looked in our local party costume shop in case, but no sign

It's the sort of thing my Dad has in his garage.

MummyPenguin · 11/03/2007 21:45

Oswald Bailey is a camping supplies/walking sort of store, don't think there's many around now. Probably a bit old hat.
