Prizes or not? Some parents saying it shouldn't be a competition, it should be a parade.

I got collared by an angry parent (who knew I helped organise the Christmas Fair so assumed I organised this but I didn't) who was up in arms about there being a prize for the winning hat in each class.

Another mum said she hadn't thought about it being a problem, life is competitive and it won't do them any harm to strive to win once in a while.

Other mum said she thought the school should be non-competitive. Sports day is mildly competitive - they play in teams but no individual races.

She's off to see the head etc etc...

I can't see the harm myself but this woman was livid.

Opinions please.

c'mon Blu, you're an intelligent woman. Surely an animatronic display involving a rock rolling away from the tomb shouldn't produce too many problems...

snort!

whilst waiting for blu can I tell you about our decorate an egg competition.
We have had to split each class into child own work and "with parents help"
A couple of parents came in with works of pure art, very elaborate and obviously spent days (possibly weeks) making them and they them said "xxxx did it all by himself" yeah right these parents forget that teachers see the kids art work in school

OK, update on The Spring Hat, aka Easter Bonnet, and the decline of domestic harmony through the Blu window.

DS still wedded to the whole cross thing, and DP, trying to be 'helpful ' ( I really wish he wouldn't) tries to tone down the ambition for an animatronic Christ, by suggesting a model 'with some blood running down'.

I explain the whole thing to my Mother, who has now left a message on my answeing machine to say that she has 'broken into' the Methodist Chapel in her village and 'removed' two of the palms laid out ready for the Palm procession and left £2 in the collection box, and that the palms will be in the post ready to be made into a cross shape on the hat. (by 'broken in' I presume she means used her knowledge of the secret hiding place for the key as she sometimes waters the plants or something).

Meanwhile, DS is still on about photos of his RL rabbits, and i have delegated this job (weeks ago) to DP, who declined to do anything about it until yesterday, by which time the rabbits are refusing to come out of thier dressing room and on the phone to their agents, DP puts one othe two remaining sheets of photographic paper in the printer the wrong way up, thus ruining it and wasting loads of ink, and the the cartridge runs out with only one rabbit printed out. DP explains that he cannot go to the high Rd to sort this out as he is too busy preparing for his week-long work trip to the ME. Since he will be atking camera and laptop with him this is our v last chance to sort this out, and the shops will be closing in 40 mins. I take DS to the park and say the photos will need to be sorted by the timne i get back.

DS and i return from the park and DS constructs bits of hat while i bad temperdley repeartedly find the end of the boody sellotape. DS plans to stick real straw around the rabbit pics, under the belief that 'I'll definitely win if we use real straw. @fat chance' i think, since the highly talented little girl who won last year has a Mum who has been on a special arts and craft course, and they specialise in full-scale installations. But everyone who takes part gets a microscopic egg, so i say nothing.

Waiting for stolen palms to arrive in post....Hat parade is on Wednesday. Dp in Middle east, having run for his life.

Sounds like it is going to be a great hat, Blu, and I think DS should win a prize for having the most original idea!

I would like to see a picture of this great creation when it's finished!!

Blu · 03/04/2007 23:40

The palm crosses haven't arrived (probably confiscated as stolen goods) so DS has made a paper cross and stuck it on the front in between the two life-size photos of the rabbits. They look like Barabas and the other one...

Blu, it seems that crosses on Easter bonnets are all the rage. My dds have been making theirs (while I was out). dd1 has a crucifix perkily tucked into the floral band, with Jesus exhibiting a rather prominent willy (should we dress him in a loincloth or leave it hanging loose as a concession to the Rites of Spring?). dd2 has a cross with a crucified bunny on, wearing an easter egg on its head.

At least the teachers won't think that I made both hats myself, they are undisputably designed by the children.

I hope DS's wonderful creation wins first prize, Blu!

Blu - I'm really liking the cross cultural twist here. (When I lived in Japan there was a story which I believe is apocryphal, but could just be true of one of the department stores having a Santa nailed to a cross as part of its Christmas decoration).

florenceuk · 04/04/2007 11:21

Fantastic story Blu!
I only noticed it was bonnet day today on Tuesday. Rushed out after school and bought yards of yellow card. Cue lots of swearing when the initial hat didn't fit (I am not a crafty person) and then DS jammed the stapler. Stuck flowers and chicks on. DS did ask what flowers had to do with Easter but I explained that was all that was left in ELC...
