Key stage one sample papers for sats

Dd has just done these and we just got her scores.

I understand sample papers are not scaled but what are they out of generally?

Specifically I am looking at the 2015 sample papers.
Part 1: spelling
Paper 2: reading answer booklet
Paper 2:questions
Paper2: reasoning
Paper 1: reading prompt and answer booklet
Paper 1:arithmetic

The above are what she has done and whilst I am not stressed overly as her attitude to learning is great and that is what matters, I do wonder how far behind she is given her scores.

What are the children expected to get at this stage?

(Don't even get me started that they are doing practice tests!! Although it could be said it is useful for them to learn the technique of the papers. But then they shouldn't have papers that young anyway! Especially as it only 'informs' the teacher assessment! Can't it all be teacher assessed?!)

There aren't any 2015 papers. 2016 was the first year.

There were no mark thresholds given for 2015 sample papers and they're very different in terms of difficulty compared to 2016 papers.

Is she in Y2 atm? Her teacher will hopefully have used questions from the 2016 papers in their teaching, so I wouldn't use those at home.

When you say different - 2016 is harder, yes?

Thanks. So what should a child be getting at this stage? Over ten presumably? And not 3's and 4's?

As Feenie says no thresholds were given in order to convert to a scale score so it could be anything

Hmmm. So what would your response be to a child getting a three on these papers in your class even without the scales scores?

TimelineOfEvents I wouldn't care about the SATs themselves, but look at the actual current abilities and progress as against the curriculum?

The test itself is (maybe) important for the school, it is unimportant for your child.

A three? You've confused me there.

I think sirfredfred's advice us very good - also be aware that your child won't be used to tests. KS1,assessment is teacher assessment only - the tests are a small part. What did her teacher say at parents' evening?

Ok bigger picture, did not make expected progress last year.
Three.. as in three marks. Total.
Teacher was completely unconcerned apparently but with a back drop of all small group work support having been removed without informing us.

3 marks out of how many marks?

Like sirfred said, I really wouldn't worry about the test. Use it to find out where your dd needs to work on.

That's the thing. I don't know how many marks it was out of, except that loads of them were marked zero. Hence my OP.

DD is in year two. So sitting sats this year. I wish we could scrap them this year as well as next!

TimelineOfEvents But surely your focus should not be on the SATS, but on his progress - how is he actually doing, where's he struggling, was is just the test execution, or is there actually some issue. Can he read, can he do maths?

If he can't, then I'd be very surprised by the teacher, and I'd be more explicit in asking exactly what is being done to bring up his level to the expected standard.

Focus on the child, forget the sats!
