writing competitions/inspiring projects for primary kids

hi. just thiking about inspiring projects or competitions fir DS who is 8. please share yiur recommendations. thanks

Radio 2 500 words competition though you need to be quick closing date is 23rd of Feb.

Mine have done that too - we found out about it from school but there's a website for it with all the details.

Daunt books writing competition for next year - deadline early Jan

I had a look at the Radio 2 500 word competition for my two and I think they'll enter. I must admit when I read some of the top 50 entries last year I had to wonder how much help some of them had from parents as some of the phrasing and language seemed very advanced.

Pippa: it’s so hard to know. My DD entered this year for the first time (she’s 6), and I think some of her vocab was impressive (she used fuming, furious, humiliated). This was entirely unprompted but I bet someone reading this from a child of her age would assume she’d had help.

However, when she had finished I talked to her about paragraphs (which she’s not covered yet at school), and encouraged her to look for suitable places to put them in. She wouldn’t have done this otherwise but it really helps people trying to read the story. I resisted the urge to ‘help’ in any other way.

I don’t know whether this was an appropriate level of adult involvement, but would be interested to hear any views!

Coastal Retreats Northumberland are currently running a writing competition for 5-18 year olds. The prize is a stay at one of their cottages.
