Teachers/TAs - visible tattoos

Hello, I was just wondering if most schools (London) have a policy prohibiting these, or does it vary widely? I work in the early years and doing a degree so just thinking about possible career options in the future, but I have one lower arm covered in tattoos so just wondering if this might be a barrier to working in a school.
Thanks!

Plenty of teachers at our school have tattoos. No issue.

I was a teacher - and I had tattoos.

One is a quote from Macbeth on my foot that I used to show the kids to prove what a Shakespeare geek I am Grin

I know a number of teachers with tats that are regularly visible because they are on forearms/lower legs. It isn't necessarily a bar to employment (unless they are offensive in some way) although I can't speak for the preferences/attitudes of all school staff with hiring decisions, of course. I'd be wearing long sleeves at interview and expect to be told to wear long sleeves at work too.

All the schools I've worked at have had staff members with tattoos. Thankfully no one seems too worried about this.

I think it depends on the school - our staff code says that all tattoos must be covered up.

Thanks for the replies, yes I'd be happy to cover them up, but good to know it's not a deal breaker in a lot of places!

One of my kids maths teachers had full leg tattoos
she was allowed to wear skirts that showed them
but the male rugby coach was forced under RFU rules to cover his
surreal

thatdearoctopus · 31/01/2017 21:53

In my school, we are not allowed to have them showing.

I've known several teachers with tatoos. One had a few small ones on her leg, the other had massive ones all down both arms, and he always wore a shirt with the cuffs done up

Lots on our female yr 2 teacher - over bot arms. yuk

There will almost certainly be a school policy, which may include something like no visible tattoos, or discrete tattoos only.

However, policies can change, and head teachers come and go. You may find at some point that your previously acceptable tattoos have to be covered and you will be working in a hot classroom throughout the summer wearing long sleeves.

I've seen a teacher on an open day in a well to do prep with a visible tattoo. As long as it wasn't pornographic I don't think it should be an issue at all.

From parents' point of view, as long as it's covered, it's non of our business.
I wouldn't like it if it was able to see, since it may encourage my ds to have one if it looked cool!
I wanted to have one when I was younger, but glad I didn't. I 've seen so many disfigured tattoos on friends these days(with old age and sagging skin!).

ACubed · 02/02/2017 08:19

I work at a nursery and none of the parents have minded, but I do make sure to tell the kids they're dumb and painful as I'd hate for any of them to go home saying they want one! You can get beige leg-warmer type things for your arms I think, should it come to that.

What's acceptable probably varies from school to school and can change with a change of management.

The dress policy at my school just states no offensive tattoos.
