DS Y1 - non fiction reading books?

Hi

I have 5 yo DTs. For better or worse you can't help but compare. DD is keen to please and loves reading. DS is no less capable, maybe more so, but seems bored over all. Therefore less motivated.

Death to Chip and Kipper for a start!

They are both reading around level 4/5.

Are there any books that follow the levels that are non fiction? He loves animals, farms, "how to" etc.

I think he's bored bored bored with the content and I've got to find him a subject he can engage with to "turn on" a love of reading.

Hi my dd is also in year one though is 6 so one of the older ones. I agree we both find Chip and Kipper deathly dull. They do have non fiction books which you can ask for. We tend to read some or all of the school books but also go to the library so my dd can choose some that she prefers - mostly fairy tale types. We have lots of different books in the house to have a look at too or read a magazine. It's all about getting a love of reading going at this age which will continue for life rather than it feeling like work! The boys in the class do seem to be a bit less interested in reading but maybe if there had more exciting books this may change!

Yes, there are whole non-fiction series within Oxford Reading Tree.
Not recommended especially on price or contents, but this, for example

When DS was reading level 4 (blue) books at school, he enjoyed the 'Dinosaurs' book from Usborne First Reading. Usborne say that it roughly corresponds to orange, level 6 books. (Actually on checking just now, I saw that it is now levelled as 7, turquoise. Though I'm sure they used to say orange. Must have re-levelled it)

So, two points here:

• Usborne have a whole range of non-fiction books and they provide (rough) level guides for them.
• If you find a book that really interests your child because they are enthusiastic about that topic, they may be happy to read a level or two harder than they would normally do.

Usborne Beginners are all non-fiction books, but they start at slightly higher levels. There are some non-fiction books in the Usborne First Readers and Early Readers too.

I was going to recommend the Usborne first readers/beginners series too, we have a few of them for DS who is now nearly 7.

Usborne also do the See Inside... non-fiction series - DS likes the ones about castles, space, pirate ships, under the ground...most of them actually! If those are a little too difficult yet, there's the Look Inside series which is new so we only have one, but those are a little easier than the See Inside ones, and available on similar subjects.
