ds started reception jan 07, and he thinks hes behind with reading

keep saying that hes not reading ok which we think he is and told him so but gets upset saying he can not read good ! he wants to learn but says his class friends are better, how do i convice him thats its ok you learn at your own pace

mine started reception at just over 4 - he is now 5.5 and is only just now getting the hang of reading - and is still sounding out quite a few of the words.

Tell him he really shouldn't worry - it takes time to learn new things (eg riding a bike or learning to swim - has he done that yet ?). But also say if he really wants to learn then you will help him practice at home - but only as long as he wants to and is enjoying it.

yes thats what we keep telling him, and i wont push him! hes learning to swim he can ride a bike but i think this is imporant to him

That is crazy. He hasnt even been at school for a term. Have you talked to his teacher. Maybe your son is comparing himself to september starters.
