Unauthorised absence - what happens next?

We have a cottage booked for half term but it only runs Friday to Friday so we will need to take DDs out of school for one day. For the record, I looked and looked for one in that area that was from Saturday but there was hardly anything left so I just went for it. I filled out the holiday request form and it wasn't authorised - which I expected - but what happens next? Do I just say I'm taking them out of school that day anyway?! I know I may have to pay a fine but that's neither here nor there. Things have been stressful recently and am not missing a day of our family holiday - we really need it. Just wondering what the protocol is now school has effectively said 'no'? Thanks x

How about going Saturday to Friday?

Just take them out of school anyway, all it means is that your child will have that day listed as an unauthorised absence, if they have 10 sessions or more unauthorised absence during the school you you can be fined (1 session is a half day).
Don't worry about it and enjoy your holiday!

Next time, just say you have ' an appointment' and it'll go through as authorised.

We have had quite a few kids who leave early on friday, get put in afternoon register and then collected at 1:30. I think it is the school trying to be helpful and work the system.

Sometimes kids are away, school knows it, knows where they are and it is unauthorised. So I would tell school she won't be there.
Trouble is, then can then chose to fine you.

You tell their teacher and just take them out. News from the office doesn't filter to the actual teacher at times so best to inform them personally. Just "dd won't be in tomorrow, I have informed the office, thanks "

Thanks all. TinyTear - I did think about that but it's drive of 8-11 hours depending on traffic etc and I want to make the most of the week. My parents are going too so I would like to be there the same time as them. I can't say it's an appointment as have two DCs. I'll just say they won't be in then - thanks for the advice

They are highly unlikely to fine you for 1 day.

You cannot be fined if attendance is "regular" otherwise. Look up Jon Platt case.

Yes just send note saying Billy will be absent on X date and that you understand it to be unauthorised.
I take mine out for five days per year. Never been fined. In fact nobody at our school has been fined.
You cannot be fined for one day unauthorised absence anyway if your attendance is otherwise good.
Would add my children haven't had a day off sick for three years so that is their only absence.

You might as well take you child out as I see all the other children having the day off school because of EID and the schools haven't batted an eye lid on the day off.

Just tell the teacher via the usual diary, to be polite.

I don't even bother to fill a form in. I just call up on the day and say that they are not coming in. If they aren't going to authorise it anyway why should I bother filling in a form?

Nothing happens - you had to have 5 or more unauthorised days before they could fine you anyway ( & I know some lea's have stopped fining until the iow case goes to appeal anyway).

As you have already requested the day off, the admin staff have probably already told the teacher, but its probably worth reminding them the day before.

Yes you can. That case is currently being appealed and DFE instruction is for schools to carry on as they were. They will still issue fines.

Saying that for one day don't request time off, just say they looked a bit peaky that morning!
