independent schools?????????

Are all independent schools private? I'm a bit confused as quite a few schools in my are which I assumed were state schools say "independent" when you look at the smaller print.
Just never took notice now when I'm starting to look for my ds

Usually yes, and are fee paying, but State schools can also operate independently of their LEA (setting their own entrance criteria, funding and being supported by a faith for example) too. The different categories withint he Sate sector are explained here
