Black cotton school shorts?

Heeelp... I have everything else and DS doesn't actually have allergies so I've got him the polyester/viscose/bombproof trousers but I reckon if it IS hot next month he will want shorts and he will find the manmade fibres too hot. He has sensory issues and will be struggling with tailored shorts anyway, and generally tries to wear as little clothing as possible.

Nowhere seems to have even cotton mix school shorts, in fact generally they are out of stock in other fabrics too (Next and Asda do have some black in age 4 - M&S are OOS - John Lewis only do navy or grey! and Sainsbury's only do sports shorts in black).

I am thinking of taking a risk on these but he is quite small for 4 1/2 so they may well be too big and fall down (he wouldn't mind if they were a bit long as most of his shorts are).

M&s have bought out a new range yesterday designed for autistic children who struggle with certain fabrics and buttons etc

What a brilliant idea! Sadly the only shorts are sports ones - they have to wear tailored shorts for regular days - but I'll keep an eye out for their other stuff when I next need to stock up.

Are you handy with a needle? You could cut down a pair of chino style trousers. You could also sew up the button hole and replace with Velcro, if he struggles with buttons.

I got a pair of chino shorts (supposed to be smart wear I suspect) in a slightly larger size - he hasn't tried them on yet but if they are tooo big we'll keep them for next year.

I am handy with a needle but I've not made him any shorts yet though I have some cut out. My backup position is if those fit OK and he will put them on, I'll make a black pair. But I'm a bit pressed for time!

I only meant chop the legs off and hem them. Making from scratch is seriously impressive!

I do like sewing - it's just a question of having the time - once the machine is out, elastic waisted shorts are pretty quick.

Pop a message on your local Facebook groups see if anyone is selling off outgrown uniform specifying what fabrics you want etc,as it's shorts there is less likely to be the usual wear and tear? If not look on eBay.

There was pretty much nothing in his size on ebay (strangely I'd already thought of that!)- as these seem really hard to find it seems unlikely there will be much going second hand either.

Fortunately the age 5 cotton chino shorts are just about wearable if I pull in the adjustable elastic to within an inch of its life. This means they will be fine next year and also he can pull them up and down without bothering with the button so a win all round (except for the occasion wear rather than school wear price tag but he's going to wear them so little this year that's not important)

Ok suggested eBay as some mums are a bit snooty about second hand uniform but I have found something that might interest you, being a mum of a teenage rugby playing lad I need a few places to get various bits and bobs. PMG school wear I use in High Wycombe, bit more pricey but they have poly cotton scout shorts if you look on the website.They do online , great quality, my son hasn't trashed any of the trousers I've bought from them. Know you want black but could dye them?

I think this is a mixture of cotton and polyester - but I do think Landend is very good

I actually struggle to find used clothes on eBay. Most of it seems to be new ultra cheap but synthetic stuff these days.
I am fairly confident something I sew will come out better than something I dye!
