maths in year 1 - what should dd be able to do

I know she is doing okay in her reading and writing, but am not sure what to expect in numeracy.

Adding and taking away, but up to where? 20?

And what else?

If you say to dd for example "what is 9 take away 7" she takes forever to come up with the answer, and then still might get it wrong - should I worry?

No no no,don't worry! They are still allowed to have help to work out additions and substractions, like a number line and fingers. It's still early days. Deffo not taking the addition over 10 yet. (By the end of year 1 perhaps, but not yet). Hth

Here is the NC site . By the end of the year she should know all number bonds up to 10.

Emkana, I have twin boys in year 1 and feel the same , ie not sure what they are doing in maths and how to help them. I found the site listed below quite helpful as it focussed on ages rather than school years. My Dt's are the youngest in their year and i would expect that there would be a considerable difference in their ability as opposed to a child who will be 7 at the end of year 1. However I have been searching for whats expected from them in year 1 so thanks to Rustybear and lady muck for the links. BTW neither of my Dts could subtract 7 from 9 without using counters or fingers and DT1 is described as being very good at maths. Sorry cant do links.
