Assessments on current school reports

I'm a bit confused, can someone please explain how the new assessments work, as we were told by our school that pupils had to pass through all 6 levels within a subject, if a child is exceeding they would be 6/7, but how does that work if a child is marked with higher say 9/10?
Fing the whole assessment without levels very confusing.

It sounds as if your school is using a commercial programme possibly Target Tracker which splits the year curriculum into six steps
