My DD is a beginning of Setember birthday,so oldest in her year (16 in the year). She moves up into a mixed Y1/Y2 class next term, and I'm worried. She's 'emerging' for pretty much all the academic stuff, either emerging or expected for the other aspects (such as 'understanding', that's at emerging level)
I know she works in a group of 6 for phonics, where the other 10 work in the higer ability group. Of her group, 4 are staying down in the Reception class for another year, and only her and one other girl are going up to the Y1/2 class. I am worried she'll struggle. Listening, staying on task, and obviously reading and writing are all very weak areas for her. I also have twin boys starting the school this September so it's very hard to get 1:1 or focussed time at home. Do I need to worry? Will she manage okay in September? I ahve visions of her and the othe child finding it very hard to keep up in the classroom, and I really don't want her to feel discouraged, or to dislike school. She has found Reception hard, despite being in a small class in a small school- she got very anxious and was hand washing to the point of bleeding earlier in the year. Luckily that seems to be a thing of the past.
Am I just being over-anxious and needing a quick slap to get me to see sense?! Do I need to try and practice anything in particular with her over summer? I do intend to keep looking at some reading books with her. She does really struggle with even simple words, like 'and'
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading.
