Year 4 handwriting help

DS is doing well in school however the same issue has been raised over and over. If asked, he can answer engagingly, he simply can't or won't get the ideas on paper. He writes the absolute bare minimum and it's messy. I think it's holding him back now and this will only make things more difficult as he gets older. I don't think It will get better on its own because he won't practise.

Is there anything we can do at home? Would practicing over the holidays help? Would drawing help (he's never liked coloring in)?

I think it depend on what's causing it. Does he have fine motor problem?
My ds is a reluctant writer, but he loves using computer and he has no problem with fine motor skills.(I think) He would happily write a story on computer, but not on a paper. He just need to get used to writing, because he has no problem that makes him qualify to use computer in the future with exams. So, I do try to make him write as much as possible. Learn to type may help with creative side if he is willing, but not actual writing if he has no other problems, I think.

No fine motor problems, he just can't get the words out of the end of his pencil. I was/am a reluctant writer. I was very able but neat and fast writing was something I never mastered. He uses so much IT kit, I'm not sure how m much practice he gets. He gets a lot of homework but it's online or spelling, no writing practice as such.

I hope being able to type means he might be able to up the volume and creativity. I appreciate it won't help with school work. Typing is a core skill will help long term. I don't write anything, even my shopping lists are on a list app I share with my oh.

This site gives you different picture everyday. Or you can choose other picture from calendar.
My ds picks his favorite picture, and write anything he likes inspired by the picture. Sometimes he draw picture inspired by it and write a explanation. Sometimes he makes up stories. Sometimes he simply answer the provided question.(But in writing.)
Also he normally does diary during summer.
