School Waiting Lists

Hello. My DD is Y1 and is currently number 1 on a waiting list for our preferred school. I gather from one of the mums at the school that one of the classes (60 entry) took in an extra child a few month ago (adopted - so is that excepted ?). Apparently another child left this week from the other class, so there is 31 and 29. I was under the impression that we wouldn't be offered a place unless another child left (to bring year total to 59), but if one of the children is excepted and the class has only 29 should we be offered a place ? Or could they simply move a child into the other class to even it up ?

Thanks

Hi, They now have to find a place for an adopted child even if it takes them over the 60 places they usually offer.

It may be that they prefer to stick to the 60 they had originally planned for and now have because one child has left.

I personally would phone them up and ask them.

The issue here is the PAN which is 60 and that gives 2 classes of 30, which is the maximum that can be in one class in infants. The pupil who was adopted gets in as an excepted pupil as a 31st pupil in the class. However when the other class reduces to 29 , the total becomes 60. Sods law says that the child will always leave from the class with only 30 in. What should really happen is that one of the pupils moves across to the class with 29, which would give 30 in each class and the maximum they can take without breaking the infant class size regs. That however is is impractical, so the class with 31 in stays as a class with an excepted pupil in but the school cannot take another pupil into the year group to make the 30 in the other class. If another pupil leaves then there would be 59 in the year group and at that point, the school had admit one more pupil.
