From 2017, the government proposes to make Y7 pupils retake the sats tests which they'failed' in Y 6. The assessment tests were never originally designed to be a pass/ fail exam. How awful for year 7 pupils, especially those with particular needs to be singled out. Exam systems are designed and weighted so that not all pupils can pass anyway. When they should be concentrating on making new friendships, longer days, becoming more independent travelling to school, subject specialist teaching and so on, these children will be singled out. How will the maths teachers in secondary cope with this testing? Some children will never reach the required standard no matter how hard they work or with even with specialist teaching. We should not be branding them failures at 11. They will need extra support that is true, but it doesn't have to be specific support to take a national test.I have signed a petition against this retesting idea. I will add the link in case any of you feel as strongly about it as I do.
