DTs are August born, should have been October born so are very young for their year, they are in reception.

Te teacher pulled me aside today and said its very important we practice reading / writing over half term and for the rest of this term if they are going to hit their targets. She went on to say she thinks they will but do need extra practice.

I actually think they have come on leaps and bounds in their reading and writing over the last few weeks and am really happy with their progress.

I guess my question is what happens if they don't meet the targets, does it matter, will it hold them back in yr1?

Short answer- it probably matters to the school in terms of targets and %. It probably doesn't matter much to your DTs.

In your situation, I would continue to read with them pretty much daily (because I think all primary children should read daily) and I would support and encourage any writing that they want to do. I wouldn't push it though, at this stage I think it's far more important that they enjoy learning and are mmotivated. I wouldn't worry too much about EYFS targets for children who are not only young, but in a way outside their 'true' cohort.

It's not going to matter in that whether they achieve the Early Learning goals or not isn't going to impact them, but Year 1 will of course be easier if they start writing and reading a little.

Thanks both. They are reading and writing, I thought really well! One mixes up her capitals in sentences but the other one is pretty food and writing in cursive script. It just seems a lot of pressure for very small children.

I'm happy to let them read anything as opposed to the set Books and I don't think the school like that either. They read packaging, signs, and can send fairly coherent text messages:)

Your DTs sound like they're doing really well specially if theyre able to read texts outside of guided books. Above posters are absolutely right that your DC meeting their targets will affect the school more than anything else and it sounds to me they would be ready for yr1 judging by the reading and writing skills you're describing.
