Perhaps get him to pronounce "quiet" by emphasising the "et" sound at the end.

I have plenty of words I pronounce oddly in my head to aid spelling. Like "sep-a-rate-ly" which I would normally pronounce "sep-er-ately" which of course, is wrong.

I was always taught that you put the e inside the word to keep it quiet. Or words to that effect.

I always tell children I teach that the "I am in the middle of the letters to keep them quiet"

LadyPenelope68 · 05/05/2016 19:17

That should have said to keep the vowels separate and quiet! Pressed enter too soon!

To clarify other word 'confusions' that will occur from time to time, there is no better book to help parents and children, than the Oxford Phonics Spelling Dictionary.

Search MN book reviews, with my name and Phonics.

Unfortunately it won't help with quite and quiet.

I would take honeys advice and emphasise the et in quiet. Encourage him to break quiet into 2 syllables qui - /k/ /w/ /ie/ + /e/ /t/

Quite is just one syllable /k/ /w/ /ie/ /t/

After that it's familiarity

ET had to keep quiet so he wouldn't be caught. (If he has seen ET of course.)

I bET you can't keep quiet.

Keep quiET or I'll put you in a nET.

He took quite a bite.

It's quite a good day to fly your kite.

My own children were taught the ET mnemonic but found younger kids don't know who ET is
