DD needs help with Maths.Explore Learning/Kumon/tutor?Help please.

DD is in year 3 and struggles with maths. She switches off and is falling behind. Her reading and writing are good.
We now think we need to help her more. We have been doing the Carol Voderman books but we both feel she now needs a bit of one to one.
Any advice on how we find a local tutor?Would Kumon maths help her?Or explore learning?I think I would prefer the tutor option.

We were in a similar place as you. Kumon is more of a self-driven practise which doesn't help a child who wants guidance & mentoring. Same goes for any kind of group/self learning method. We've now started a one-to-one tutor after speaking to DD's maths teacher at school who agreed, and we can really see the benefits. She has someone who explains, follows up and gets her to practise. He also tests her and gives little rewards for doing well. She's now so much more motivated, it's been a good decision. Previously I did this myself but now I can't since the birth of DD2. You can find a tutor by asking around or checking online. It need not been a very 'professional' set up at this point, more of a nurturing and encouraging adult who knows how to teach will do.

The Doodlemaths app might work for you. Especially if you could sit with her while she does it, and encourage her and supplement the explanations where necessary.

It didn't work well for my dd as it just got her further ahead on curriculum stuff and that meant she found lessons dull, but I think it would work really well for catching up or consolidating as it follows the national curriculum and only moves on to a new topic when the child is getting 90% right on the previous topic.

I am generally a big fan of Kumon for getting ahead and boosting confidence. But not for catching up. I agree with artistic. And I think you said it in your OP when you said "...but we both feel she now needs a bit of one to one. "

I have hired a variety of group tutoring and private tutoring with my now yr 6 and yr 8 children. Private is always so much more focussed on their particular needs, and they engage is a way they don't have to in a group.
