Does anyone know what the average and / or expected band is for the end of reception please?

TIA

There is a massive range, but here is what the book banding people reckon is typical.

This has been linked before.

DD finished on level 6. This was above average.
DS finished on level 3. This was average.

Both hit level 9 around same time in year 1, start of summer term.

DD at least is a typical MN child, an excellent reader. Hopefully DS is heading the same way.

It really depends which scheme and how the school use the levels. Current school have most of them them on wildly challenging levels, middle groups were around band 4 at start of yr 1 iirc. They would have been more like 2 at DS old school.

It will really vary from which system the school uses, DS' school uses the RWI ditty books and I know from speaking to his teacher that he's ahead by a year but there is no level system in place (just started the pink ditty books if that means anything to you). She she also said they don't start properly assessing until they reach 6 though.
