Is every school supposed to have a SENCO?

I went to have a chat with my daughters teacher and asked to see the SENCO. I found out about them on the NHS site. The teacher then said that the school didn't have one.

Should the school have one? and what are the rules about them having or not having one

I know another local school does have one. This would be based on Scottish rules (I know different parts of the UK can have different rules)

You'd be better asking in the Scotsnet board, or you'll get inaccurate advice (see post above). As far as I know, sencos don't exist, but each local authority will have an additional support needs advisor. But that may have changed in the past few years.

Ah - I was coming on to say 'yes', but then spotted the bit about Scottish schools, and there is a LOT that's different about Scottish Education system so I wouldn't be sure.

I don't think Scotland schools have Senco's as such. I believe in our school one of the principal teachers is responsible for SN and there may be TAs allocated.

Scottish schools do not have SENCOs. The legislation is different. You need the member of SLT (Senior Leadership Team) whose remit covers ASN (Additional Support Needs). There will also be someone at QIO (Quality Improvement Officer) level who oversees ASN provision within the LA (Local Authority).

No SENCO in Scotland, no SENs in fact...it's a completely different system.

Depending on the size of school there'll be someone in charge of additional support needs and possibly a dedicated additional support needs teacher.

Thanks knew we had something along the lines of SENCO as my mum just signed someone off that's basically doing that job for a local school but didn't know anything more
