Fractions - y4

Had homework for Ds, subtracting fractions from a whole number.

I have to admit, I had to google as I completely forgot how to do this.

The method we found best was for example :-

5-2/4

Use the deniminator to make a fraction within the whole number, therefore 5 becomes 4 4/4 answer 4 2/4.

Is this the correct way?

Have you an easier way of explaining this?

If I'm honest Ds grasped what I told him and carried on with his homework but I'm still not sure we've gone about it the easiest way.

Seems tricky for y4 but I'm not sure.

I think you are correct, but I'm sure some teachers come along and give you some explanation.

meanwhile, I think this is very good site to understand basics of fraction.

I explain that way to my class.

These are the new expectations with the new curriculum.

In two years they will be multiplying and dividing fractions as well as a list of other things.

Thanks Blossom. There were other, longer methods but this just seemed the easiest.

Thank goodness for the Internet.

Seems each year group has more difficult challenges.

This game is really good for understanding fraction, percentage, number lines.

Thanks Irvine, I'll take a look later Smile I'd like to know that Ds fully understands.
