Fractions - y4

Had homework for Ds, subtracting fractions from a whole number.

I have to admit, I had to google as I completely forgot how to do this.

The method we found best was for example :-

5-2/4

Use the deniminator to make a fraction within the whole number, therefore 5 becomes 4 4/4 answer 4 2/4.

Is this the correct way?

Have you an easier way of explaining this?

If I'm honest Ds grasped what I told him and carried on with his homework but I'm still not sure we've gone about it the easiest way.

Seems tricky for y4 but I'm not sure.

I think you are correct, but I'm sure some teachers come along and give you some explanation.

I explain that way to my class.

These are the new expectations with the new curriculum.

In two years they will be multiplying and dividing fractions as well as a list of other things.

Thanks Blossom. There were other, longer methods but this just seemed the easiest.

Thank goodness for the Internet.

Seems each year group has more difficult challenges.
