How to find a good tutor for 11+

Not sure if I should be posting this here or on the secondary school board, but I need to find a tutor for DS2 to start at the beginning of yr 5 (September). He will most likely be sitting both the 11+ and CEM.

How do people go about finding a good tutor - I realise that there are quite a few, but how do you know whether they are any good? Also if anyone has a recommendation for a tutor in the Middlesex region, PM me.

Personal recommendation, speak to parents who's children have done it recently.

Ergonomically - problem is that I don't know anyone who has. I live in an area where very few take the test. It's the neighbouring counties where most people take the test.

Have you tried the eleven plus exams website?

A lot of people book the best tutors from year 3 and 4 so you might struggle to find an available one with a high success rate.

Thank you. I will try posting on there. I realise that many of them are signed up but we have only recently decided to put him forward for the tests.

It's also a good place to look for information if you decide to DIY.

OP - you need to cast your net then. Seven degrees of separation and all that. Who do you know that knows someone that knows someone? Spread the word you are looking.

You could try Explore Learning (which we use) and Kumon (which I have no experience of - sorry). Not everyone agrees with them, but our DD loves Explore and it's filled in the gaps that the school has left, as well as getting children ready for entrance exams.

They are organised and seem to be covering all the material, although there is a fair bit of marking for parents to do too.

Try this website www.tutorhunt.com. You can view potential tutors and chat with them and ask them all questions you want before purchasing their details. I must say that if a tutor has many free slots they are not really sought after. Ask them for references. And ideally they have to be real teachers as if you child does not have the base from school it is very unlikely that they will be successful in 11+ exams. That is my experience with my son.
I had recommended a 'brilliant' tutor from a friend who was charging a crazy rate. The tutor then started cancelling lessons and we got rid of her as the tests were close. Another highly recommended tutor has gone on holiday with no notice one month prior the tests.
I found our current tutor from this website with a lot of questions before choosing her and both of my children had made great progress for 3 months.

Happymummy - someone else has mentioned Explore to me today. We have one really close to us, so that will definitely be worth looking at, but possibly in addition to a 1-1 tutor.

Have a fab 11+ recommendation but for girls

I used a brilliant tutor. She is based in Shenley and due to demand only see students in her house. She manages to get the pace just right and I don't know how she does it but the kids loved going to her. My daughter only had 10 months with her and was offered DAO and Parmiters.
