dd is never going to get to be in a school nativity play and I am sad

At dd's school, the reception class do a nativity play each christmas. The older years songs and do other acting things in the Christmas show, but not the nativity.

Fair enough.

But they have 2 intakes a year, September and January. And dd was born in May. This Christmas she is still in Nursery. By next Christmas she will be in year 1. (Jan-July in Reception).

I've just worked out that this means that she never gets to be a sheep at the manger, and I am surprised by how sad I am!

[I am also miffed; today was her last day at the nursery attached to the school and after a whole year there I expected her to come out with a folder of artwork and things she has done. I know she has done loads of stuff through the year and never brought anything home. But none of them brought anything out. Do they just throw it away?]

Ask for any of her work. I did when my dc left certain classes, and the staff let me have the books they didn't need to keep for 'records' etc.

I'd thought ds would never do a nativity . We lived abroad where they weren't pc until last year then he went into Yr 3 , so too old for them at school. Howver at the Carol Service this year they had a tableau and he was a King - only a crown , but in a nativity nonetheless.

You should call and ask them to keep her "work" for you to collect. They may well pass some on to her Reception teacher as part of an Early Years portfolio anyway.

Our school doesnt do a nativity play for reasons of political correctness. However our local church does and Andrew is going to be a shepherd in the Christingle service

If you are that sad then it might be worth seeing what opportunities your local church has.

Our local RC church does a Nativity thing every Christmas Eve where all the children go dressed as whichever character they want and the story is narrated and they call up all the different characters in turn....everyone is welcome, RC or not!

Regarding sending home work from nursery - DD1's nursery didn't send anything home either. I was amazed - I just assumed we would get some sort of folder or record but there was nothing at all.

I had a minor row with the head about it, but she wasn't going to budge and I didn't want DD1 to leave on a sour note, so I let it drop. I was very disappointed, though.

I'm just being silly about the nativity thing really. There will be plenty of opportunities, I know. Our church will probably do an ad-hoc nativity on Christmas eve. (They ask for a woman who "never got to be Mary" to come and be Mary - I'm always amazed how much it can mean to someone, to finally get to be Mary!). I was just watching all the parents going in to the Christmas service (nursery class not involved) and thinking "next year, that'll be dd in the silly costume" - and then I realised that it wouldn't. Sniff.
