Do you have to register for primary school?

This is probably a really silly question but if you want your child to go to a primary school in the area you live do you have to put their name down or does it happen automatically?

DS is only 4 months so I'm worrying far too early (always need something to worry about!) but apparently the primary school on our road is very good and people keep scaring me with stories of having to register children before they're even born to get places in good schools!

Daren't phone the school because they'll think I'm stupid and tell me to phone back in four years!!

You apply the year before they start. Everyone does the same. Relax!

you normally apply at the beginning of the year they're due to go to school - my dd2 is 4 this spring and will go to school in sept so we have to apply by the end of january (you need to apply to the LEA and the school directly in our case as it's a faith school)

Here we had to apply before the october half term the year before they are due to start.
