Best time to move away for Yr 2 & Yr 5

DH & I are quietly making plans to move to another part of the country. Our jobs are flexible so would like to try & time our move with DC's schooling in mind & make the transition as smooth as possible.

DC 1 is yr 5 and DC 2 in yr 2. They'll be going to the same school but otherwise neither will know a soul . We definitely want to be in before applying for secondary school for DC1 in October and could do with a couple more months making final work/home adjustments so wondered whether Easter might work giving both DC a full term in their new school before the summer hols.

We plan on getting them quickly signed up for their preferred activities (Cubs, football, swimming etc) and will be living in the village so hopefully making friends will come BUT I am worried how the DC esp DC1 will cope at this age (or whether they'll ever forgive us ) .

Why not wait until summer hols? Or is there something I'm missing about the admissions process? If not summer then Easter?

Are you buying? If so, remember to have a few months' contingency in case the chain falls apart...

We're selling then renting but can afford a bit of overlap if need be. TBH summer hols would be easier all round but we were unsure whether going into Y6 without any friends at all would be tougher.

We moved DD this September to a new school in Y5. In hindsight I would have preferred to have moved her at Easter, as you say, to give her a chance to make friends to meet up with over the Summer holidays. As it turned out the holidays, although huge fun and very busy, meant that she had a long time to think about changing schools without being able to do anything about it.

I would say that if you have made the decision to move, then sooner is better than later.
