Numbers bonds

I've had a bit of a Google but can't seem to see any consistent information. Can anyone tell me if number bonds to 20 need to be known in year 1 or year 2? The national curriculum doc seems to suggest it's a year 2 requirement but at parents evening last week was told my year 1 child needs to know these and has to start learning them. Just having a little niggle that if national curriculum has already had a downward shift to make things trickier, why a schoo, would voluntarily make it even more so if they don't need to? I didn't say any of this at parents evening as I wasn't really aware of any discrepancy then. We've had a practice for a few days and she's picking it up fast so think by next week will be fine but just wondered if this was usual or not?

You need lego so that child can understand visually what 15+5=20 means. Does your child know her number bonds to ten? Can they apply their knowledge? There is no point in knowing that 8+2=10 if you cannot apply it.

I hate the new maths curriculum. Its too much too soon. My daughter in year 2 and being made to learn times tables when she is still counting on her fingers to add up.

Thanks for your reply. There is no issue regarding teaching her them, she's picking it up no problem at all. Yes knows number bonds to ten inside out. I just really wanted to know if this is necessary for year 1?

They start in yr1 and consolidate in yr 2? Some will struggle with this concept in yr1. If your ds isn't struggling then I wouldn't get too hung up on it tbh.

I just don't see the point why you are so worked up about it???
If she's getting it, it's no big deal.
Some children get it easy. And they move on. Some may struggle.

Wasn't aware I'd come across as being 'so worked up about it'??!! Simply looking for clarification about being necessary for year 1 or 2.

I don't know about curriculum, but if your dc's target is from YR2, even she is in YR1, means she is ahead, right?
I wouldn't mind if my ds is learning something from above year group, as long as he is getting it. Only if he is struggling, I will worry.

But the target isn't from Y2 Irvine it's a Y1 expectation in the new curriculum I've linked to.

Ok, MRZ. What I wanted to say is, if the child is secure with number bond to 10, isn't it natural to move onto 20?
I just didn't understand why whether it is yr1 or yr2 target mattered so much, since op's child is "picking up fast", and one PP already said it's YR1 target but OP was still questioning it.

Children need to learn maths when they are ready. Different children learn at a different pace.

I feel that the new maths curriculum does not give enough time for consoldiation in year 1. Reciting number bonds is a different skill to actually using them in real problems.

I can see where the confusion lies though.

If you look at the statutory part yr1 says 'represent and use' only in yr 2 does it mention recall. The different wording suggests they are supposed to be 2 different things.

It's only the non-statutory guidance that mentions memorising them, and even schools that have to follow the curriculum aren't obliged to follow that. It does suggest that understanding how number bonds work is a bigger focus in year 1 and that children need to know them by the end of year 2.

As long as the target is suitable for the stage that the OP's DD is at with her maths, it doesn't really matter what year the objective is from though.

That's what I wanted to say!

Year 2 statutory requirement is to recall and use addition and subtraction facts to 20 "fluently" which is the next step. They don't need to be able to recite them just know them.
I would focus on knowing number bonds to 10 then on the understanding that twenty us two tens then if the know that 2+8 =10 they know that 8+2=20 and 12+8=20 and 18+2=20 so it isn't a case of learning lots of facts
