What is the new Foundation Stage for 3-7 year olds?

My son's school is very proud to be piloting the Foundation Stage for 3 - 7 year olds (I think it replaces the Key Stage 1 curriculum). The head talks a lot about the importance of learning through play. The only problem is I don't know anything about education, I'm only a parent, so I've no idea why FS is a good thing, and how it differs from what came before. I also heard on the news the other evening that Foundation Stage can be detrimental for more able children (and of course I like to think my child is a genius ) so I'm not really sure what to make of it. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Slightly worried by silence. Is this some weird experimental thing my supposedly normal school is trialling???

Not even heard of this, ds1 is in reception, perhaps he's still doing the old stuff???

I did hear a chap on the radio suggesting that the importance of changing the method of teaching is not because the new method is so much better than the old one, it just keeps the teachers 'fresh'. Apologies to any teachers online, but his theory was that anyone can get stale or jaded if they do the same thing year in year out.

Anyway, perhaps all the teachers are in bed tonight after a hard day at the chalk face. Try bumping tomorrow? I'll be interested in their views too...

Think it may just be in Wales found this link

In England, there is currently a consultation about the Early Years Foundation Stage, but that is for 0 - 5 years old. Not sure whether it affects Northern Ireland and Wales too.

Partridge seems to have found the answer for you. Are you in Wales?

PeachesMcLean · 08/12/2006 21:17

Aaaah, we are in Wales - that might be the problem if it's only here. I did wonder why I couldn't find much in the media about it, and the only stuff I could find was from the Welsh Assembly Government and I have to say, not very user friendly! (No surprise there then....) Maybe I'll post a new one specifying Wales in the title... Thanks all though.
