Parents' Evening - cut

Hi,

It seems our school has just decided to not do a parents' evening this term as it is covered in the end of term school report.

This means we will only have one set time to meet the teachers in the academic year.

Is this a growing trend?

Not that I've come across.
Does this mean you might not meet your child's teacher until into the Spring Term?
Not being able to put a face to the name is one of the biggest things I struggle with in Secondary schools - I'd hate it in Primary, where they tend to have one teacher for the majority of the week.

My two - now both in high school - have only ever had one parent/teacher meeting per year (I refuse to call them "evenings" as they are over by 6pm!) I questioned it once - never again! Apparently staff are always available to discuss any concerns; lots of parents don't engage; it's time consuming etc... Hmmmmmm???

Legally schools must provide an annual report but there is no legal requirements to have parent consultations although most schools have at least one.

One of my daughters primary school years we had one parent consultation meeting per term. Them we were told in the spring term there would be no end of term report as it would be covered by the parent consultation ?

My DC's school used to have termly parents' evenings, but they have stopped doing the autumn term one and, instead, they and the PTA organise an autumn social where the parents and teachers have an informal chat over food and drink, while the children play together (faith supper kind of event). We have found this a much better way of new parents meeting the staff in the school and other parents, and it is an absolute success.

There is a spring term and summer term parents' evening and a summer report and I think that is more than sufficient.
