Evolution(of species)

Hi!

We were reading a book and my ds came across the word "evolution".

I tried to explain to him like, first there was a micro organisms on earth that evolved into plants, animals, birds, etc. , and all living things took a long time to evolve into different forms today.

Then he said, "ok I understand, so it's like...", but it didn't sound quite right.

I really struggle to explain something to him since English isn't my first, and my ds's only language.

Does anyone have any recommendation for good resources to explain about evolution to 7 year old?

I haven't read them yet but these two books were recommended to me by a friend with science background. She had bought them for her nephews to teach them about evolution. You can get them both on Amazon.

Does he know there used to be 'Dinosaurs', or know what 'fossils' are?

I would imagine there must be BBC Bitesize programmes, that cover similar concepts in an age-appropriate way; come back to me if you can't find anything suitable, and I'll try to help.

It is probably only around 150 years since Charles Darwin had his theory of Evolution, and of course, the Church were not happy with such ideas at the time. If you are not of a British background, it is possible that your culture or religion had different ideas on Evolution and 'who created the world' etc, so for children it may be confusing to almost be told

two different versions of the same 'story'.

Yes, I am foreign, but my country teaches Darwin as well, so no worries there.

I just had a look on suggested sites, it looks great! We will have fun reading this weekend.

If you live near London you vould visit his old house Down House near Biggin Hill. They have interactive displays and you can see where Darwin did some of his experiments. They also have a mock up of his cabin on the Beagle.
