non uniform day - ideas please!

DS1 has a non uniform day (fortunately has been postponed from this week til after Christmas)with the theme of "a story book character".

He wants to go as Willy Wonka but strangely I can't find a plum coloured velvet tail coat suitable for a very tall 5 year old.....

any other ideas would be greatly appreciated! He loves Roald Dahl but said the Witches (I thought we could just reuse Halloween costume) were too scarey, Harry Potter is too scarey, 3 bears is a bit impractical...

I'd really like to make or put together the costume rather than buying a whole outfit of possible.

Any ideas?

Thanks - we thought about Charlie. DS1 is very concerned that people know who he is meant to be but I might push him on that a bit.

I suggested Old Macdonald or someone from a song but he was insistent that it was a story I'm sure they'll be loads of Bob the Builders there but he does like to get things "right"

My DS1 5, went as Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. [Yeah, there is a book too!] Best bit was wig, made from 2 balls of brown wool and wonderwebbed [I love that stuff] onto a scrap of cotton. You wrap a red bit of cloth/ scarf round over the top so it doesn't show anyway. The rest of the outfit was pretty easy - white shirt, grown-ups waiscoat, trousers tucked into boots...eyebrow pencil moustache. He loved it.

Peter Pan/Lost Boy/Captain Hook?

Anything from the Magic Faraway Tree e.g. Moonface/Saucepan Man?

good ideas Zog but DS1 doesn't know those books!! Suppose we could sneak them in before January!
