Stolen uniform - how to mark uniform so it doesn't get taken

My DD has 'lost' many school cardigans when new. I say 'lost' in inverted commas because it has happened 3 times in two years, brand new cardigans with a sown label with her full name and my telephone number on it. I am now in the process of labelling her new uniform and I was wondering how to openly and visibly mark the cardigans so it's harder for them to just 'disappear'?

The mark or feature needs to be visible but not so much that it will contravene uniform rules; this is a school specific cardigan by the way, each one is £16 and I am quite sick of paying for brand new ones constantly.

Cheers all Smile

Is there any way you can get her name or initial embroidered into the jumper?

AlisonWunderland · 28/08/2015 08:37

Sew the buttons on using a contrast colour

AnotheBloodyChinHair · 28/08/2015 08:40

Berthatydfil thanks but that option would cost a lot of money!
Alison thank you, I did think of that although I feel the cardigan might contravene school uniform rules plus my DD might be too embarrassed to wear it.

Coloured sharpie, write name on the back of cardi. Down the sleeve works well, too. On the out side of each garment not inside, none of this discreet labelling.

I write DDs name HUGE inside the back of the cardigan. There is no way another parent could miss it. We haven't lost one in 2 years.

ArcheryAnnie · 28/08/2015 09:05

At my DS's old primary, the only way not to have his uniform disappear was to write his name in sharpie on the inside of the clothing - on the fabric, not the label, as the labels can just be cut off.

Minisoksmakehardwork · 28/08/2015 09:09

I use attach a tag and screw the tag into the bottom cuff on jumpers and t shirts so it's visible from the outside. Trousers and skirts I screw them into a top inside hem, so if anyone was to iron them, they'd feel a lump even if they didn't see it.

Pengweng · 28/08/2015 09:16

I have just used these on the DTs uniforms. They basically melt onto the fabric so they can not be unpicked or cut out. Not massively expensive either.

Yes agree with the sharpie on the lining inside the cuffs etc.
those iron on fusible labels above also look very good

AnotheBloodyChinHair · 28/08/2015 10:04

I am definitely doing the writing her name in huge letters inside the cardigan, I just wonder with what though as it is a navy blue cardigan and not many colours will show properly, but I'll give it a go. Thanks everyone.

My name tag do iron on labels that kept into the fabric and never come off. I put 2-3 on very visibly. They work on everything including socks!!!

amarmai · 28/08/2015 20:49

if you have a sewing machine you could maybe embroider initials yourself.

ToTheStarsMorag · 28/08/2015 21:16

could you buy that iron on interfacing stuff that they sell in sewing shops and sort of make your own large, iron on label? If usually comes in white so if you ironed on a rectangle inside the back a black sharpie would show up.

I had 2 stolen in the first 2 days back!! Only into year 1 aswell... They now have his name covered completely inside with permanent marker! 🙈 So far so good! 😁😁

Silver Sharpie pen works on dark fabrics :-)

ifIonlyknew · 23/09/2018 07:39

I put name tapes in strange places - my children know where they are, then if something goes missing they can say to the teacher "my name is sewn into the left pocket" or something and they look at everyone's and sure enough find them. I used to just do the normal places but with people cutting labels out (we got one new (well it had been 13 weeks earlier) cardigan back because I had put the name in two different places and the child/parent had only cut out one label so when child lost it it was returned to us!).. inside cuffs is a good one for blazers!

Norestformrz · 23/09/2018 10:07

Our school uniform has the child's name embroidered on the rib/hem ...people just cut it off. If determined nothing will deter them.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 23/09/2018 14:12

I put labels in wierd places like half way up the jumper so they are hard to cut out. Also sharpee them in gold

JimmyGrimble · 23/09/2018 14:14

Permanent marker on the hem. It’s the only thing that works. On the first day with my class every year we label all their jumpers and cardies (on the labels) and still they get lost. Children leave them all over the place and then go home and say they’ve been stolen!
