Hello Everyone ! I am bit confused about teaching my DD French or Spanish in primary school. She is 6yrs old and starting yr 2 in September. She is quite clever and advance in her learning. And doing very good so far. I would love to get some advice from Mums out there. Thanks in advance :))

The languages department at my secondary school recommend Spanish as being fully phonetic and therefore easy to learn as the same letter patterns make the same sound. It is a lovely idea.

My dd has been H .ed and had a language tutor. As she starts school this year the HOD said she was pleased that dd had done French and not Spanish as at the school they do French and German.

I think at this age a combination of languages are great, maybe start with just one for a year and then add another and so on through primary.

Mine ended up at the end of y6 having done Italian, French and German.

Thanks all. Yes my DD has done French lessons in French club at school last year while she was in yr. 1. For whole year. And that French club is run by independent group of French Teachers in school premises. But I didn't find those lessons very structured and I thought I can teach her by using various resources at home and can use that money for buying resources. Those lessons were £8 per hour. But after a year doing French lessons my daughter shows bit of interest in learning Spanish. Now that's where I got stuck that which language is more useful in further Education ? Which has got better chance into employment wise and which one is more easy to learn ?? And I am asking myself ' am I doing right thing by letting her choose Spanish instead of French ??

And I personally find Spanish language much easier.

Spanish is ranked second in terms of number of people who speak it as their first language (slightly ahead of English ) so it seems a sensible choice. Having said that many secondaries teach French and German so primaries teach these to give pupils a head start
