Role playing a christening?

My ds (year 1) appears to have taken part in role playing a christening at his state primary school today. Anybody else done this? Anybody know why they might have done it?!

as part of RE?

It's often done as part of RE- celebrations, and of welcoming a new baby. Just to let the children know some of the rituals that people do. They will have been told about how different faiths welcome a child.

yes mine did this. in the local church with a doll. and then they did it again in an assembly last week.

this week they are playing at being 2 characters from a Hindi story, something involving monkeys.

Is it just me that's a bit uncomfortable with this? We are not a Christian family and the school is not a Church school. I am happy with my children learning about christianity and other faiths, but this seems a bit "in your face" - particularly as there seems to be no attempt to role play other faiths baby-welcoming ceremonies. Or am I being over-sensitive?

I'm not wild about it either. but are you sure they aren't also role playing other events from other religions? My 5yo has a letter this week outlining the faiths they are looking at and inviting parents with knowledge of these faiths to help.

No, I'm not sure, fennel. I think I'll ask this afternoon. I just have a feeling that there might be a bit more emphasis on christianity than I'd like. Ds writing his chirstmas list at the weekend and saying to himself "Now how do I write x-box? Oh, yes, x like the Jesus sign" was a bit of a give away!

I think it varies a lot with the teacher. dd1's (yr2) current teacher is a keen Christian so they get more emphasis on the "Christian family which many of us belong to", while dd2's teacher (yr1) doesn't seem to be, so they are doing more of the Diva (?) lamps for Diwali, and dressing up in saris and scarves.

My ds2 did this in year 1.

My daughters school appear to have done a Christening and a Wedding role play at the local church! She is in Reception but I think it was Class1 and 2 that did it! I was amazed but they are a C of E school and a bit God-Squad if you get my meaning....
