maths problem; please help!

DS has just failed an entrance test for an academic school because his maths didn't meet the required standard. This surprised me as he is above average according to his school reports and set in present school. Apparently the problem was worded problems; he couldn't apply the maths he can do. He can resit in a few months. How do I help him? Would be very grateful for suggestions of any websites or books. His basic maths is fine!

There are a lot of sites on the web. If you google 11+ sample papers, there are hundreds of them.
Mathsisfun.com is great. You can have 30 mins free. I am surprised that his school isn't using a internet Maths programme of some sort.
A lot of children who have taken the Maths test will have had hundreds of hours of tuition.
However most of the schools have taken steps to try to make their tests tuition proof.
I like Khan Academy. Com, they have word problems,samples and video's but it will target skills rather than practising papers.

Try the nrich site. Sorry I can't do a link. As a guide, the stage 1 and 2 problems are about right for primary age.

Oh year five! So it is just a entrance exam. Aw poor thing. However , Maths is vital.
I still think Mathsisfun.com is a good site as they cover word problems and list all the possible work in Maths that an above average Year 5 would be expected to attain.
He will need lots of practice as the test will be a time trial.
