What do you think makes for the best parent teacher relationships? Especially keen to get teachers opinions.

Being honest!

If you speak in euphemisms you may not be understood.

If you only talk about positives you aren't being honest.

Letting the teacher get on with their job, whilst being supportive at home with homework, remembering sports kit, science experiment etc.

Our school are terrified of parents so the best thing to do seems to be to stay as far away as possible.

They seem to adopt a look of fear as a parent approaches.

I think it depends just as much on the school and their willingness to engage with parents in a professional and effective way. There should be courteousy, honesty and willingness to learn on both sides ideally.
